Chamorros are the indigenous people of the Mariana Islands. The Chamorros are primarily Austronesian. Scientific data dates the Chamorros on the island over thousands of years ago years through the Austronesian expansion. Austronesians are a large group of various peoples in Taiwan, Madagascar, Australia, and Philippines that speak the Austronesian language.
Austronesians are credited with being the first people to invent catamarans, outrigger boats, lashed-lug boat building, and the crab claw sail which enabled them to travel to the islands of the Indo-Pacific including Saipan.
